As I stated in another thread, I just finished another printing session.
The good news is that I used the same developer as last week's printing session, with no alterations at all.

For those just tuning in, I accidentaly mixed a batch of ID-78 with twice the amount of sulfite it calls for. It turned out to be a happy accident, since this ID-78+ (as I hereby baptise it) has an incredible tray and shelf life as a working solution. Not to mention beautiful tones with JandC polywarmtone (very, very, very similar to Neutol WA). I'll post an example later on today.

To give you guys some idea of this developer's life span, I mixed it last week, and printed with it monday. I then poured it back into a bottle, and let it seat until today, when I printed with it again. At the end of today's session, it had a very faint yellow tint, kind of like D-76 1:1, if my memory serves me right. Neutol WA, on the other hand, lasted one printing session, and died before I could use it again (2 days later, for example).

Has anyone noticed how happy I am with this new developer?

And changing subject: Today I bought a pack of nitrile gloves, since I ran out of latex, and man, it's so much better! Latex gloves always ended up with holes in them due to the chemicals, and I had to use 2-3 per printing session. The nitrile gloves I bought today showed no problems at all. One glove lasted the entire session, and didn't rip when snagged. The box of nitrile gloves cost me about twice as much as latex would have, but it seems like a good deal...

Well, that's all for now, folks. It's 3:30pm and I haven't eaten anything all day long. Lunch calls... I'll post an example of what the developer is all about later.

if anyone is interested Nitrile gloves can be bought at Home Depot in the paint dept. As Andre says, they are more money but you always get what you pay for in my opinion.

Well I did tell you how good ID-78 is, without your accident  It does have a great dish & shelf life, is a touch warmer than Neutol WA (liquid) dev.

What else can I say

Yup, you sure did, Ian! Now, unfortunately I *like* this accident, and will probably keep mixing it like that. Maybe I'm too proud.. hehe.

BTW, Lee, I bought the gloves at Elliot's Hardware... So there's another option from HD or Lowe's

And Sean: I cheated the system and leeched to galery. I hope you don't mind, but if this is a problem I'll edit this and put normal link instead.

This is what the developer does to JandC polywarmtone (keeping in mind that this is a scan, colors may be slightly off):

Please forgive the stich line on the left of the scan... I print bigger than my tabletop scanner allows.

I went the first time to a medical supply house over near the hospital district and bought 2 boxes of 100 nitrile gloves for about $20.00. They were higher at Home Depot.

Elliots Hardware is one of my favorite places to go on rainy days.

Andre, do you have any HC-110 or similar commercial liquid concentrate around? Try putting a drop of one of them on a nitrile glove. You may find the concentrate eats a hole through it. I found out the hard way one fine day in the lab that dimethylformamide (a solvent used in many liquid concentrates) will soften and eat away at nitrile gloves. So while they are stronger they are not necessarily a panacea. They are good for people with latex allergies, though.

Nitrile gloves are good for printin, but I find them hopeless for sheet film development. Latex however gives a good grip on the slippery little d*&%i¤s.
