18-55 AF-P Nikkor On D3300

I have an 18-55 AF-S VRII for my D3300 now. An 18-55 AF-P VR is on its way to me. I know that to have all of the functions with the AF-P lens I will need to update the firmware in the camera. Will the AF-P work just without the Off feature for AF and VR before the update or will it not work at all?
