I'm looking for a general-purpose lens to buy and I'm looking at either a 150mm G-Claron or a 150mm Rodenstock Sironar. I'm looking at the Rodenstock because my other lens is a 90mm Grandagon (I shoot mostly architecture) and if possible I prefer to use the same brand for all my lenes. However, I found a 150mm G-Claron for $330 in 9+ shape and I'm wondering if that would be a good buy. My reserach tells me it is perfectly sharp with small aperatues even though it's optimized for close up work. Another thing is I do like to do some (not a lot) of close-up work, so I'm wondering if the G-Claron is the better buy.

I should probably note that I will be using black and white negatives and also color transparencies, in case that affects anyone's opinion. If anyone has a better recommendation for a lens that is in the $300 or less range then please let me know.

Thanks,
Brent

Have you considered the difference in speed? I use the 305 gclaron on bigger formats and F/9 isn't a problem at all, but I have and 90mm F/8 lens for 4x5 that's a bit dim. Might be something to think about since the Sironar would be an F/5.6.

Image circle on the G Claron is quite small, barely covering 4x5, so you will not have room for movement. My 210 300 G`s are fine on 4x5. The R is a better general lens.

The 150 G-Claron covers 5x7 if stopped down to f32+. I use it all the time. Like a Dagor coverage will increase if stopped down. It's small, light and good for close work. But in 150 the size advantage is not great. I would think that the Sironar would be slightly sharper but have less coverage. Probably comes down to how much closeup work you plan to do. The G-Claron will have the edge here.
