5"x7" is a nice size for portraits, any larger gets to be too big on furniture and desks in particular. I like larger for walls, usually.

No skies are brighter. That is why it is important not to take a reading of the skiy.

Longer exposure, lean against a wall if necessary. Use a tripod.

Box speed works if the light meter has been calibrated, which it sounds like yours has not been calibrated, AND one meters without the sky in the meter view. Sun in the meter view is an almost guaranteed over expose for slide film.

Use a faster film.

Skip the N-1 exposure! Open the aperture a f/stop [over expose for more detail] then print on variable contrast papers with the best filter contrast for that photograph. You do not have to make your life harder to enjoy photography.

Very sad news. I learned a lot from reading both Roger's and Frances' articles and books. This is a loss for the photographic world and the rest of the world.

But good photographers know when they got a good photograph. They do not have to look. As I have posted before, I just cannot get the hang of chimpin'.
