It's not Nikkor, but for many years the Tamron 28-105/2.8 was my "standard" lens. Very sharp, a bit heavy, but if I had to take only one lens, this was the one. Seems to be readily available on ebay for under 200.00.

I used to do this all the time with my old Vivitar 283s. E.g., set the flash to f4 and the lens to 5.6-8 for -1.5 stops of fill flash. I never had a problem and it almost always produced the desired results.
