That's a beautiful child and that setting.. looks like an illustration from a book of fairy tales. The light falling on his side really gives him a glow

really nice....

thanks guys. I scanned this at work and now I look at it at home and it looks way dark! is it really very dark or does my monitor at home need adjusting??

I wouldn't say my monitor is perfect, it is however a reasonably set-up LCD unit. The picture does look a bit dark, but not being able to see the original print I cannot tell. There is enough light on the central subject, just, to see the important part of the picture though. I cannot seem to get even half decent scans of prints, so you are doing better than I! Mick.

All roads lead to Rome, they say. No matter where in this picture I look, I end up being drawn back to the kid.
It's a great portrait, the light is just about perfect, and tonally it's extremely well balanced (at least on my monitor).
Great portrait!

This is a beautiful photograph. I can't decide whether it is slightly too dark or not, but since it is a scan, it is hard to tell. Even so, it is a very strong image, one that I would be quite proud of if I had made it.

P.S., When I wrote the above, I was using a computer at work to view the gallery. This picture did look slightly dark and muddy on that monitor. I just viewed it again at home on my Mac, which has been calibrated, and the image looks much better. If the print looks close to the way it does on my Mac, than it is a keeper.

This is a really great portrait. I agree that it has a sort of fairy-tale, fantasy feel.. not too dark when I brighten my usual darkish monitor setting. the child's shirt and sox are white enough, the fence on the close-left has some detail in the shadow.. the depth of field is perfect and the fence post adds perspective of scale... to offer any idea, I might try a little less contrast exposure of the MGIV and a less exposure time to get a little more detail in the shadows -or not.

Thanks again for your comments! On the actual print there is shadow detail galore. my scanning abilities are nonexistant, hence the nonexistant shadow details
