TV

TV

I took this photo early 2007. The camera was a vintage Voigtlander Avus 6x9 plate camera. I was exposing onto some Agfa Isochrom glass plates that were circa 1930s, hence the blotches on the image. I think the original ISO was around 50 however my tests established it was now around ISO 6. I spent ages metering & thinking about what I was going to do before opening the shutter. I was using my standard 35mm camera as a meter. Since then I have bought a spot meter that will work better for this type of photography. The plate was processed in a Nebro tank kindly lent to me by Steve at the Lighthouse. Dev used was HC-110 as it is meant to have some fog reducing action. Neg was contact printed to some Agfa MCP & developed in Kodak polymax paper developer. I really like the blacks of the MCP paper & look forward to it being available again. The image I'm uploading was scanned from the contact print.

There is something very seductive about this photograph. Maybe its the framing and sense that a heavy TV, balanced by a single rod, with a newspaper sleeping lazily on top which coupled with the gritty background and flawed negative create.

wow, this is really interesting. I know someone who is buying old film and paper from ebay and getting mixed results. But this is fantastic. spooky image.

Thanks for the comments.
I was wandering about this place looking for potential photos & the TV set caught my eye. It expressed a state of mind of people who give TV low status. A cheap old unit is all they need, as compared to so many contemporary people who are spending thousands of dollars on big screens. So they can watch sports & reality idol shows.

Apart from that I did like the form of the TV & also the multiple verticals in the bottom of frame. I was happy with how the tones came out in the TV set in the print. Dark tones with detail are quite visually seductive.
I tried to make an enlargement but couldn't get the tones right. I can see why people are so fond of contact printing.
