split tone sample

I'm really enjoying Tim Rudman's book on split toning. I had a bit of trouble with this print. The edges wouldn't tone and I'm not sure why. I like the colors in the center, but it seemed like it took an awfully long time toning (about 35 minutes). Any tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm hooked!

(I had to scan the print in two sections. It's an 11x14 print and my scanner won't go that big. That's why there's a seam. I don't know much about photoshop).

Ilford WT fiber, Ethol LPD 1:6; Selenium 1:4, 2min; Kodak Sepia (old) bleach diluted 1:3 (from working solution) for 1 minute, toned 35 minutes.

Beautiful ... I believe that you are enjoying Tim Rudman's book. All of his books are very inspirative.
You captured here water like silk veil and the toning enhanced it perfectly.

r.

thanks guys. I hope I can get to one of his workshops in Montana. There is no one local that still works in these processes. It's very lonely in this town, to say the least.

Those are some pretty awesome tones. I've allways done sepia b-4 selenium. I was concerned that the selenium might tone to completion leaving nothing for the Sepia toner to convert.

Eric, the selenium has to be watched carefully. I keep a duplicate print in a water bath (tray) next to the selenium tray as a comparison. It seems that there is a 'snatch' point depending on how the contrast is and how many low tones there are. I did a few tests with the stouffer 4x5 step tablet to find the approximate time. If you wait too long, the tone shift is very noticeable. It's a lot harder to judge when there are no true blacks. I think the bleach & sepia toning are harder for me to judge. It could be that my quantity of solution wasn't enough in the tray or something to do with fixer. (I read that over fixing will bleach the highlights).Unfortunately I ran out of paper so I can't do any more tests. Hopefully soon I will be able to do more. I think the results are worth the effort of going through lots of paper & chemicals to get there.

I think FirePhoto has a good suggestion about burning in the edges. I'll definitely give it a go.

thanks for the tips

djkloss,

Thanks for the tips on trying selenium first. I went ahead and tried a few and got some really cool color shifts that I have not seen when doing sepia first. Although it seemed pretty unpredictable and had no rhyme or reason where the color shifts took place.

I too noticed in increase in bleaching and toning times in the sepia step.
