My friend in Havana

This isnt a great photo on my part but I thought I'd show it just for others interest.

This guy takes photos of the tourists outside Capital Building for 1 Peso a shot (about 80p/$1.10). As you can see by the scan, his camera is held together by bits of Gaffa tape and is nearly ready to fall to bits but still functions. His great 'act' starts when he takes off the lens cap, performs his magic and 10 minutes later hands you a paper negative a 6x6 print.
The only thing I didnt understand was that I only ever saw him put two trays of chemicals (not three) inside his camera to process the images?

I let the tour bus go on without me and stayed behind to watch this guy perform. One of the highlights of my stay in Havana....and the Rum :)

In India you used to have these guys at every train station. Dev and fix in the camera and usually a big bucket of water on the side... to wash. Paper negative then repro to make a print.
Bad wash but one of the most beautiful portrait someone made of me !

Guillaume - I've never seen these guys in India but I did make sure that I washed the print/neg when I got back to the hotel, unfortunatly the print got damaged but if I get a chance I'II scan the neg and add it here tomorrow.

I took pictures (and had mine taken) at exactly that spot earlier this year. I'm not sure but I think I recognize this particular guy.

What a bunch of characters. I made portraits of two of them and even took a few digicam shots of the inside of their cameras. Like their cars, it astounds me how much they make of whatever they can find.

Love it. I'll bet the portraits are awesome. Anybody that complains about their equipment after seeing this should be thrashed and publicly humiliated. Kidding of course. Skilled craftsmen that know their tools.
