Hi Nick. These are excellent portraits (as are your others). Personally I'd like to see a little bit more definition between the background and the darker parts of the person, especially the hair. But that's entirely subjective so feel free to ignore me
This and Mint VI are my favorites. Dramatic, Rembrandt light gives these a very painterly feel, and gives them each a kind of gravitas. Agree with Ian, though... would be good to have a bit more separation from the b/g... just a bit more detail in the hair. The prints look rich and gorgeous.
The lack of a hair light is purely due to a lack of lamps Before now I would simply say its in keeping with trying to emulate the chiaroscuro/painterly effect but I've since solved the problem by placing the key *very* close to the subject, freeing up a lamp to try the hair light/separation - I had a really neat new neg, but ruined it trying a ziatype ... heh, still though, more work planned in this style ...
I do like the implicit simplicity of '2' point lighting though and might try just one lamp for a different look soon - I'll need the faster Rollei R3 for that
