Dear Koraks, I'm curious what you are searching for, The pictures you show look simple and of average daily subjects with a fascination and a curiosity, can you take me by the hand and tell something about your urge to collect?
Well, I'd gladly do that, but for the most part, there's not all that much hidden behind it, especially not an image like this one. It's really just a HV pylon in some woods. Is there a message? Well, a little - I know that this part of the grid will be expanded and part of the woods you're looking at will be cut down in the next few years. So there's an element of melancholy. The sole pylon sticks out of the otherwise quasi-natural field quite literally like a sore thumb. Then again, the whole thing is artificial if you think about it; the field is evidently human-made and -managed, and so are the woods in the background, which cannot be much older than a few decades at most. The somewhat austere, geometric composition is consistent with this man-made nature of the landscape. Mankind thinks in terms of straight lines and likes to partition things neatly, and 'nature' is supposed to fit into the square grids we design. That's what this image literally shows, also compositionally.
Is that something I'm conscious of during capture? Not necessarily. The things I mention feature a lot in my photography, so it's kind of second nature for me to photograph this way. The 'layered cake with a single candle on top' composition is also one that I use a lot - perhaps a bit too much, really. The story has shaped itself, as have the photos. Earlier versions of shots like this tended to...well...suck. All manner of things were wrong with it when I came home/out of the darkroom to study them. I'm inching my way towards an approach that I feel works for what I'm trying to do here. And in all honesty, nothing of that ambition really is very lofty or ambitious. In the end, it's also just the attempt to make a pretty picture whenever I see something that catches my eye. Ultimately, despite the storytelling, it's really not much more than that.
Anyway, if you'd like to talk about it, feel free to drop by. I think we're not much more than an hour's drive away from each other.
