Jarvisburg General Store

Long closed general store in Jarvisburg, NC. Passed by on the way to the beach for 15 years, finally got to shoot it.

Aside from the focus issue (I mistakenly let my camera do the work), any suggestions would be welcome. This was a tough scene for me; bright sun (sweltering heat, too), no clouds and a light subject.

Always difficult to convey bright sun in B&W The shadows don't look deep enough somehow. Looks like a much more gentle sun with its less harsh shadows which better conveys a gentle sadness. Weathered nature of store and pumps are conveyed well. There's a sad decay here. Almost a "Grapes Of Wrath" quality.

The focus issue also works in the picture's favour here. I like it.

Brings a similar General Store to mind--On a side road here in Rural Kentucky (not like in "Deliverence"--the film thank you) there is a long deserted general store (but locked up) that I would love to photograph in 4x5 or better still 8x10--I really wish I could get inside as well--Actually it would make for a fine studio as its wide open inside ! Nice image but a little too soft for me--a shame!!

Thanks so much for your perspective. It really helps to hear from others.

Although I wasn't specifically going for a sad look, I was sort of wishing that the old store could somehow come back to life. It did seem lonely and out of place sitting beside a four lane highway. A rusted old 1930s or 40s Ford or Plymouth sedan parked nearby would have made the look complete.

Exposure was made at about 9 or 10 in the morning, on a blazing hot and humid July day. Slightly overcast, from the humidity may account for some of the shadow definition. My dodging may account for some, as well.

I personally like both images. I would do some intense close ups of both of the Gas pumps. The one you have posted is very nice, but I believe you could do a lot more than what you have. Old gas pumps are premium collectors items, and some detailed LF photographs are just standing there "waiting for their close up's".
