Can't really express why, but I really like this one. The tiny bit of sky at the very top of the pipe is an excellent touch.

Yes. 'No really specific comments, but somehow very pleasing. Making a gross industrial structure look good is not easy. Bravo for turning your eye to the composition. I'm sure most would have walked on by.

I like this composition. I find industrial plants fascinating subjects. One of my most frustrating experiences was working a series of control system startups in some major papermills. Exciting views at every turn, but one needed stone tablets brought down from Mt Sinai to bring a camera in!

I agree all the qualities of this photograph are just great. I also agree "it's harder than it looks" to compose these things. I am drawn to what i call "The rise and fall of the industrial base" and really the only good way to capture the declining or decrepit subjects is to abstract them to a degree. My problem is that i see the whole thing and think all of it is important, and connected. I miss the part about putting too much emphasis on "connected" and forget the part about if the whole thing is important, and if they don't need to be connected, there is a whole roll or whole box of film to take up what i insisted needed to be put on one frame. My other problem is that i don't really like abstracts - well many i don't but i have seen many that i really do like. I go to Paul Strand and Brett Weston (many of his abstracts just don't appeal to me, but the ones that do are amazing) for both abstract examples and the terrific "glow" of their prints. Wish i could do either. So, i think i need to break out the old rolleicord TLR, place an order with Adorama, and start exercising the abstract! Great photo, good eye, thanks for putting this up and the lesson. I love APUG for this very reason.
