Great photo!

As to the pebbly surface, you need to speak to someone who prepares sheets of ice for curling .

IIRC, it is something to do with the little droplets of water in the water vapour in the air freezing when they come in contact with the ice surface.

Wow, thank you all again for the nice comments. Murray, your comment cracked me up, not least because my son has taken it into his head that "Rawhide" from the "Blues Brothers" soundtrack is the best song ever written, so it has been playing on infinite repeat for the past few days.
