Something I can't do is dig Dad up and bring him back to life. I want to rescue this 4x5 chrome of him. I had no portraiture experience to speak of but he asked me to. I buried it out of shame due to sucky lighting (shadow behind head). How can I rescue this? Anyone with experience?
Tight crop. E100G has plenty of resolution, as long as your focus was good and your hold steady, you should be able to crop to head only or head and shoulders, tight enough that the shadow looks like part of the composition.

Ahh I see what you say. Well, if it wasn't for the fact my dad wanted to be remembered in this rocking chair by this window reading his Bible. So I have to show that part.
Some sleeping on this and I have an idea. Photoshop. Extend background into shadows using a variety of techniques like a pickup-brush that paints on another coordinate. I could lift the background above his shadow painting it below and reduce the harshness of the shadow to make it look intentional, fading it in in layers. Then crop the left and right a bit, more on the right and then print.
The cost of Adobe subscription is steep though. I guess I need to dive into that pool at least for Lightroom and Photoshop since I want to make my own digital negatives for alt printing off of scans.
While I'm repeatedly told that Photoshop is better (and it does have more support and more downloadable automation), GIMP is free and has the tools to do what you want. Might be worth trying it before springing for Photoshop. And then there's Darktable, the free answer to Lightroom...

Thank you for your kind statement. I am going to try to touch it up myself. I think I can do something to tone down that shadow, and possibly hide most of it. I need to build up skills on a new program. It's been a very long time since I've done this kind of stuff and with a different toolset entirely.

I'm with Acere. I like it as-is. His relaxed posture might not survive a crop, and the room lighting, and lines seem to point to his face and the bible. Quite expressive, unpretentious, and his personality is really there. My opinion.
