The Waiting Room

Amtrak proved that, in spite of what we all expected, rail travel can be tacky. But there are still a few places that retain the elegance of times past. Union Station was built between 1912 and 1914; unconfirmed rumor has it that the marble columns were recycled from the old Grand Central Station in New York (demolished in 1910 to make way for the modern Grand Central Terminal). Close to being abandoned in the 1970's, the good people of Oneida County chose to purchase the building to use the upper floor offices for various governmental functions while refurbishing the public spaces.

Hi Monophoto, I see nice tones and what must be brilliant highlights in the ceiling but the geometry bothers me: the right side of the corridor is liend-up with the image boundary but the prominent center pillars hang over to the right.
Also the flag in the top left corner does not work for me.

That's a fantastic find and image; I love old train stations, columns and "upstate" NY (though in this case, Utica really IS UPstate, unlike Yonkers). A really beautiful restoration and that ceiling is very reminiscent of Union Station, DC. Go figure
I imagine you've been to the more humble but beautiful Hudson, NY Station?

Argus - thanks for pointing out the tilt problem. I think it's fixed now. Not sure what happened - I distinctly recall leveling and plumbing the camera.

Vic - My experience with the Hudson train station is that it is one of the regular stops on the trip to New York. But I will definitely add it to my list of places to photograph.

Actually, I was alerted to the Utica station by a segment on the local TV news - "one-tank trips", or day trips that one can make on one tank of gas. A concern that I have is that with all the paranoia these days, walking into a train station with a big camera and tripod is likely to cause the cops to arrive in force. While I was photographing in Utica, my wife was hunting for the ladies room and got into a conversation with the station master. He was actually very pleased that I want to photograph "his" station, and offered to move things around to make the pictures more interesting. He also encouraged me to come back - which I plan to do.
