Amtrak proved that, in spite of what we all expected, rail travel can be tacky. But there are still a few places that retain the elegance of times past. Union Station was built between 1912 and 1914; unconfirmed rumor has it that the marble columns were recycled from the old Grand Central Station in New York (demolished in 1910 to make way for the modern Grand Central Terminal). Close to being abandoned in the 1970's, the good people of Oneida County chose to purchase the building to use the upper floor offices for various governmental functions while refurbishing the public spaces.
