Lone Pine Sunrise

I took this photo with my Shen-Hao 4x5 on February 15th, 2003. I made the 200 mile drive up from Los Angeles earlier than morning with the expectation of getting a good photograph at sunrise since I new it had snowed the day before. When I got there in the pre-dawn light I realized that it was overcast and I would not get the image I had wanted. Then just for a few seconds the sun came through the clouds and I got this negative. The light was gone a few seconds later.

Nicely done!

Very nice.

I like the softness of the clouds in contrast to the jaggedness (is that a word?) of the mountains.

Man, your story sounds like Ansel's experience shooting Moonrise over Hernandez.... This is a great shot. If you get one a year like this, you've had a successful year. When you saw the shot, was the camera ready to go; or, did you have to set up quickly before you lost the light???

Sierra means serrate or jagged in Spanish, so you weren't the first to notice this.

Lucky for me, I was all set up - "just in case."

Thanks for the encouraging comments!

Hi Ben

Great photograph. Yes, I agree also, in the Ansel Adams tradition. Your description
sounds like a page out of his book. I bet you were thinking of his, Ansel's, Lone Pine
photograph with the horses in the foreground. I would have opted for a wider angle
to add some foreground that you could crop later. Excellent work.
