Barrier Island

Barrier Island

This is from the atol surrounding Chuuk. I liked the red shirt as a bit of unexpected color, and differentiates this from the normal windy-palm-on-an-island shot.

But I have been told that it totally ruins the sense of isolation that makes these sort of images appealing.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Matt

Beautiful capture, but the red shirt kills it for me! I understand your thought process, but try as I may am unable to get the color to work as a device to give additional strength in any way to the image.

Thanks for the critique Charlie. I think I have seen this too much to really see it with any objectivity.

It might work better if the bit of red were more obviously a t-shirt. And there looks to be a bottle or some object on the ground that distracts. Lastly, though I'm looking out my window at snow... this scene is that much more inviting, but I think a bit of a warming filter would make me book a flight!

Thanks Suzanne. I guess I'll have to go back and get the shot right!

If you are feeling snow-bound, consider this bit. This was a pause between dives. The guides had brought along a fish in a small hold in the boat. This was a good 3 hours+ later, on an 80 degree day. As my brother and I explored the island, we could hear the guides talking animatedly. After about 10 minutes of this, one came up to us and asked if we had any matches. The fish was part of the surprise lunch they had planned for us!

About 5 minutes later, they asked us if we would like a Sushi lunch...we didn't have matches.

We did have PB&J sandwiches packed. I'll let you decide which would be the better lunch.

hey matt,
what if red shirt represents isolation??? eh? if a ship out in harbor area wrecked would be really cool as well as the red shirt. i have a picture of a boat wrecked near an island just north of the equator while i was on vacation. if i can find it, i'll try and post somehow. anyway great shot!
