I was travelling back from Victoria on the ferry this summer, and noticing how everyone was using their digital camears to take tourist photos, so I thought I'd confuse them with my Mamiya C220 ...
Matt,
Don't you just love that ferry ride! I certainly do . I shot a roll of B&W infrared in May on said ferry route. Don't you just love it when you do something different and everyone just stares at you but no ones approaches. [they are all so polite]
Nicely done!
Nice shot Matt, and very sharp, I like the use of the square format, and the vertical dynamic of the ropes. I have been asked several times when shooting with my Mamiya T.L.R " Is that A video camera ?
That's a great shot, Matt! It's so easy for most people to overlook the everyday while looking for the extra-"ordinary"! You've shown what beauty they pass up! Great lines, shapes & flow!
Thanks everyone for your comments. On the cropping issue, Thomas, there are a number of conflicting factors that resulted in the crop chosen. When I was taking the shot, I was unable to get any higher, so it was impossible to get the bottom of the rope in, without also including the edge of the lifeboat which was suspended, on davits, in the air. The other reason for including the lifeboat edge, though, is something that suffers from the scan/upload process. On the negative, and in my higher resolution scan, the lifeboat edge has an interesting texture and tonality that contrasts nicely with the tonality and texture of the rope. No doubt because of the many layers of paint on the boat, it looks almost plastic, in contradistinction to the rope's "tweed".
Unfortunately, when I resize the image, and upload the result, much of the texture and tonality for both is lost.
I have started to wonder - does the uploading process add some unexpected "sharpening" to the image? It certainly seems to modify the appearance of even my resized images.
