Nikon F - light leak? lens flare?

What do we think this is? Shot with a Nikon F and a non-ai 35mm 1.4 on HP5

I know the F doesn't have the usual foam light seals, and this frame is the only one on the roll that exhibits this issue. I was carrying the camera around in full sun at one point, so I'm inclined to think it isn't a light leak. The adjacent frame shows a vaguely similar flare, but it doesn't have the same unusual appearance. I don't think it has to do with my processing either, otherwise it would probably show up outside the frame or on other photos from the roll. Weird stuff.

Looks like a lens flare. Was the sun just out of frame?

Sometimes the flare bounces around inside the camera a few times casting the shadow of the camera internals onto the film multiple times. It looks kinda like the shadow of the frame mask.

Yeah, it was evening and i’m facing west taking the photo. Gotta be lens flare. I think the older 35mm 1.4 might be more prone to flare than most.

You can always experimentally shade the lens with your hand while looking through the lens when shooting in those situations. It will become abundantly clear in the viewfinder when you have lens flare.

If you dig around or ask am AI, you'll see references to this pre-AI lens being known for some flare and ghosting. I have an AIS version of it and do not notice this at all.

Then again, it always has a hood on it, which no doubt helps. It's a really nice lens but I sometimes wish I'd gotten the f/2 just for the reduction in size and weight.

When lenses flare, they do so in odd and unpredictable ways as the light bounces around their innards. Here is a picture I took with a Leica LTM 50mm f/2 Collapsible Summicron. No cleaning could eliminate that lens' tendency to flare in the pattern of the aperture blades, although it was otherwise a very fine lens:
